About the Book

In a world where the ancient force known as the Ether once brought balance and peace, fear has twisted it into something forbidden. Once-protectors called Shadow Dancers have become corrupted, and a new regime of Hunters seeks to imprison or eradicate all Ether-wielders.

Twelve-year-old Elias Bennett lives quietly in the lower city, hiding a strange power he doesn't understand. But when a moment of danger awakens his ability, everything changes. Forced to flee with his younger sister Lily, Elias begins a journey into the unknown, hunted by forces that see him as a threat—and possibly a weapon. As Elias grapples with his identity and the mysteries of the Ether, he discovers he's not alone. Whispers of rebellion stir across the land. Children like him are awakening. And the fate of the world may rest in the hands of those once feared most: the Children of Ether.

From Chapter One

The butterfly danced just out of reach, its wings a kaleidoscope of orange and black against the summer sky. Lily's laughter echoed across the garden as she chased after it, her small feet kicking up clouds of dust. From his perch on the porch, Elias watched her with a mixture of affection and anxiety. The tingling sensation beneath his skin had grown stronger. Blue sparks danced in the dark. The stories always ended the same way: with the arrival of the Hunters. But this time, Elias wouldn't just hear the story. He would become one.
